What is an electric car?

An electric car is the same as a traditional car, however, instead of using a petrol or diesel engine, it uses an electric motor. It utilises a large battery you charge up and can be topped up at home or when you’re out and about.

Due to the switch to electric, the car doesn’t produce CO2 meaning your drive is more eco-friendly as well as more cost-effective. It’s also much quieter and you’re generally exempt from fees like congestion charges and road tax.

Why choose a used electric car?

Electric cars tend to be a little more expensive than traditional vehicles as parts aren’t as widely available. They also feature top-of-the-line technology making them more desirable.

But like all cars, if you choose a used EV, it makes them much more affordable. Prices are lower whilst you can still access the same top-quality vehicle and the latest features.

Is an electric car right for me?

As a relatively new technology, you might wonder whether an electric car is right for you. So here are just a few of the benefits:

  • They’re generally cheaper - fuel, tax, and emissions zones are all lower and sometimes free with EVs
  • They’re more eco-friendly - they produce no CO2 helping reduce emissions
  • Charging is convenient and constantly improving - whether you’re charging at home or when you’re out, it is steadily getting faster and more accessible
  • You get high-end tech - the technology in EVs is typically more impressive than their petrol and diesel counterparts
  • A quiet, comfortable drive - EVs are nearly completely soundless and extremely comfortable

Why choose Peter Vardy for your used electric car?

Which used electric car should I choose?

Thanks to Peter Vardy’s huge choice of vehicles, there’s an electric car out there for every driver. Whether you’re looking for a compact city car like the Kia Soul or the Renault Zoe or a larger vehicle like the spacious hatchback, the impressive Polestar 2 or roomy Peugeot e-208.

You could choose a manufacturer you know and love and test out its EV offering like Audi or BMW. Alternatively, choose a dedicated EV manufacturer like Polestar, which create superb all-electric vehicles.

Pick an EV that’s right for you based on your driving needs, budget, range and what you want from your car. Struggling to choose? Our team is more than happy to help you make a decision that’s right for you.

Used electric car FAQs

Below, you’ll find common questions customers have when buying a used electric car. If you can’t find your question, contact our specialist team for help and advice.

FAQs

Although not all EVs are automatic, it is much more commonplace as the need for manual gears is removed.
This will depend on which used electric car you choose. The average range is usually around 200 miles, however, between 100-300 miles is common. If you need to go further, there are higher-capacity vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz EQS and Tesla Model S.
Electric cars can be slightly more expensive to insure, however, this is typically down to the higher price of the vehicle and because parts and mechanics aren’t as readily available. As electric cars become more common, the price is likely to even out.
Although it’s not set in stone, you shouldn’t be too concerned about having to replace the battery on your EV. It’s generally considered they will last for the lifespan of the car but at least 100,000 miles and often much longer.
You can charge your used electric car at home with a dedicated charger, out and about at places like supermarkets and petrol stations and quite often at work if the facilities are there. For public charging, you’ll typically need to download an app to pay for the electricity but may also be able to use contactless payments.
Although there is some debate, EVs are considered better for the environment as they produce no carbon emissions, helping to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere and making them more eco-friendly.
You will see an increase, however, when compared with petrol and diesel prices, it is typically lower. You can also find better electricity tariffs to charge your used EV including options for cheaper overnight charging - just speak to your electricity provider.
It depends on a couple of factors, the type of car you choose and the type of charge you use. Typically, when you use a rapid charge, you can top up between 20 to 80% whereas a home charge could take ten to 12 hours. Most people charge overnight at home if they need a full charge.
